Three sculptures created entirely or in part of wood. There is one sculpture on my website (Neptune, the Blue Planet) that was created with a combination of wood and bluestone. Stone goes back to prehistoric times as a skin on the Earth (horizontal), in a reposed state. Wood grows vertically upward from the horizontal position of the earth from which it grows. All that stands vertical reaches for the sun as it needs the sun (like ourselves). It is as a state of wakefulness in relation to light, whereas lying horizontally implies a state of rest.
Earthling is a tribute to where wood comes from: the trees. The wooden sculpture shows the family of a tree, where more trees grow out of the original mother tree. It gives homage to its Origins: the soil, the seeds in its offering bowls as a recognition of the Great Spirit who makes it all possible and who is connected to our planet being part of our massive universe.
Neptune, the Blue Planetshows a process of growth. With a father figure providing a solid base (square), thus giving room for the twirling growth of his child ending in wood: a soft unfolding.
City Tree refers to a tramway tunnel being built in the Hague (Netherlands) during the 1990‘s for which a lot of trees had to make way. Trees replaced by concrete. This wooden sculpture was created by filling tree-bark with cement, held fast by green plastic fishnet, lying astray on the beach nearby. It was placed on the building site, where a tree had stood before. It stayed there for a long time, some three months, and was eventually taken by a stranger. |
